Because personal housing is less expensive than university housing, university halls of residence typically cost between $85 and $220 per week. Depending on the university, this fee may include any or all of the following: an internet connection, a gym membership, content insurance, one’s own personal restroom, catered meals, and occasionally even a cleaning service! Universities also attempt to provide a choice of housing options both on campus and outside the city to help students choose the best solution for their needs. And whatever amenities the institution provides can be easily enjoyed for considerably less money if you choose personal housing.
Travel and Food Cost
When discussing food costs and other expenses, keep in mind that there are many hidden costs in every student’s day-to-day life, but when considering the basic expense of living in the United Kingdom, keep in mind the basic living expense per year provided by the Home Office just to be on the safe side. Usually, the amount a student is required by the Home Office to have available—£12,775 to £16,000 in living expenses per year (depending on exchange rate)—is totally sufficient to ensure each student has a safe and comfortable place to live, has plenty to eat, plenty to spend AND plenty to save in case of emergencies.
